Five hidden coves on the southern coast
Between Weligama and Tangalle there is a shoreline the tour buses never reach.
The stretch of coast between Weligama and Tangalle looks like a single beach on Google Maps and turns out to be a dozen. Some are famous; the ones worth writing down are not. Here are five you can string together in a slow week, hopping by tuk-tuk or scooter.
Hiriketiya
The horseshoe cove everyone loves for good reason — a small bay with an intermediate right-hand break and a jungle backdrop. Come for sunrise, stay for the smoothie bowls.
Silent Beach, Talalla
No signs, no vendors, no buildings. Ask for 'Silent Beach' at Talalla and you'll be pointed down a coconut path to a strip of sand and a shallow reef. Bring your own water.
Rekawa turtle beach
Best visited at night from March to August, when green and olive-ridley turtles come ashore to nest. Go with the local conservation team, not the freelance guides.
Practical tips
- A scooter is the best way to cove-hop — 2,000 rupees a day, and every good beach has a shaded parking spot.
- Reef shoes for anything past Talalla — the coral shelves are shallow and unforgiving.
- Don't leave valuables on the sand. It's rare, but the coves are quiet enough that opportunists exist.
