The southernmost sunset: Dondra lighthouse
A short detour with a big payoff at the tip of the island.
Dondra Head is the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. A 54m octagonal lighthouse built in 1890 stands on it, and from the base you can watch the sun drop into the Indian Ocean with genuinely nothing between you and Antarctica. The detour from the coast road takes twenty minutes and is worth every one.
Getting there
From Matara, follow the coast road east for 6km and turn right at the Dondra town sign. The lighthouse road is signed and paved the whole way.
The best hour
Arrive by 17:30. The sun sits low over the ocean for a full twenty minutes before it drops, and the light on the whitewashed tower is worth as much attention as the sea.
What else is there
The Tenavaram temple at the base of the road is one of the oldest continuously worshipped sites on the island. Take twenty minutes for it on the way in — the small stupa is quietly beautiful.
Practical tips
- You can't climb the lighthouse — it's still operational — but the base grounds are free and open until dusk.
- Bring a light layer; the wind picks up sharply at sunset.
